Storm Brewing Desert Storm; Weetwood Old Dog; three guest beers [H]

The Poachers will become a permanent outlet for Happy Valley Brewery, a new brewery recently opened in Bollington. The first beer is Sworn Secret (very hoppy) to be followed by Lazy Days & Black Magic (Nov 2010).

The Poachers is a pleasant and very friendly community pub with fresh home-made food run by Helen and Rob Ellwood. One of the two remaining free houses in Bollington and a flagship real ale pub. The two regular beers are Weetwood Old Dog and Desert Storm from local Macclesfield brewery, Storm. Additionally three ever changing guest beers (often with a dark one at the weekends) support local and distant craft breweries, 20 diverse Belgian beers are available in bottles.

Occupying a corner site it is solidly built and has been created by merging five stone built terraced cottages ,and blends well with its surroundings. In the centre, diners and drinkers mix affably around the bar. By the door, the comfortable lounge chairs and open fire provide a warm, relaxing and surprisingly quiet niche, where you can stare into the fire while enjoying a pint of real ale. A secluded beer garden is nestled to the rear of the pub - a real sun trap on a lovely summer's evening. It is situated on the very edge of the village, at the foot of Blaze Hill, a hundred yards from the Peak District National Park. Both the Gritstone Trail and the Middlewood Way pass nearby.

Good food is available lunchtime and evening with a small separate restaurant area, although you can eat in the main bar. Both full restaurant and bar menus are available. The lunchtime meals are particularly good value and very popular with local residents. On Monday evenings, the kitchen is closed. The pub is not open Monday lunchtimes. Regular quiz nights (often in aid of the local Bridgend Centre), Monday jam sessions and the golf society make the Poachers very much part of the local community.
